Our House

A bookselling family, six generations deep.

The Haymes name has been bound up with books for more than two hundred years, from a Rotterdam family of dealers in the early nineteenth century to the shelves we keep today. Six generations on, the trade has crossed oceans and outlived empires, and it has settled, quietly, on the Tweed coast.

What has not changed is the work itself: the patient hunt for a fine first edition, the care of a leather binding, the pleasure of putting the right book into the right pair of hands. We deal in the second-hand, the antiquarian and the genuinely rare, and we treat each one as though it matters, because it does.

Step inside and you will find a room built for lingering. Ladders, lamplight, spines worn soft with reading, and time enough to browse without a clock over your shoulder.

Haymes & Co., booksellers since the early 1800s.

Books Bought for Cash

Have books to sell? We would love to see them.

A single fine volume or a whole library, we buy the lot. Downsizing a collection, settling an estate or simply making room on the shelves, we make it straightforward and we pay cash for the right books.

  • House calls across the Tweed and the Northern Rivers, at a time that suits you.
  • Associates in the capital cities, so larger or interstate collections are no trouble.
  • An honest appraisal from dealers who have handled rare books for generations.
  • Discreet, unhurried and paid in cash on agreement.
The Espresso Bar

A good book deserves a good coffee.

Tucked inside the shop is a small espresso bar, poured for people who like to read while they drink. Pull up a chair, open something you have never heard of, and lose an hour the pleasant way.

No rush, no minimum, no need to buy the book to earn the coffee. It is simply how a bookshop ought to feel.
